I’m planning to spend my holidays in France, can I use my driving license ?
Depending on your country of residency, conditions may differed.
According to french regulation, some requirements apply to everybody :
- The license is valid and does not have any endorsements, restrictions, or suspensions.
- You are above the French basic age for driving the vehicle category (e.g., 18 for cars)
- you’re in compliance with any legal medical restrictions (prescription glasses….)

I’m from the EU or from EEA
You can drive in France using your foreign driving license.
I’m from outside the EU
You can drive in France using your foreign driving license for the first 12 months after your arrival.
If your license is not from the EU, you also need an official translation of your license. This applies if the license is in a language other than French too.
Alternatively, you can obtain an international driving license.
What happen if I want to stay longer than 12 months in France ?
You must get a French driver’s license.
Your nationality may allow you to exchange your foreign license for a French license.
If your country doesn’t have an agreement with France, you must pass a theory test. You may also need to pass a driving test.
