I’m from outside the EU, can I use my driving license in France ?
A driving license from a non-European country is valid for 1 year from the date of normal residence acquisition. This excludes a British license issued before 2021.
According to french regulation, some requirements apply to everybody :
- The license is valid and does not have any endorsements, restrictions, or suspensions.
- You are above the French least age for driving the vehicle category (e.g., 18 for cars)
- You are in compliance with any legal medical restrictions ( prescription glasses…)

What happens after one year ?
You must apply to exchange your non-European driving license for a French one if you are moving to France.
